miracle pit paste - diy deodorant

I have no idea where to begin. This homemade deodorant kicks ass.

It eliminates odor all day, and even in to the next day if you lounge around and don't get going for awhile (although that never happens around here).

It takes about 1 minute to make and you probably have the supplies in your pantry already. I have heard you can use cornstarch instead of arrowroot powder, but I have not tried that.

I have hiked in the humid Florida's woods, in August, for hours and emerged with no smell at all! My husband has worked on our house,  on scaffolding all day, and NO ODOR!

And to be clear, if either one of us engaged in those activities with drugstore deodorant, it would have worn off and we would have stunk.

But the part that makes me so happy about this discovery is that my kids will NEVER have to use the crazy, chemical stuff. They get to start off with this all natural potion.

Make it and let me know if you love it too! Also, make sure you do not glop it on, it really just takes a bit.

  1. Oh I know I switched in May and am never looking back, even got my husband to try it out a couple of days. I did notice that is does leave an oil stain on some fabrics though...

    1. I apply a small bit of baby powder after applying the deodorant, and it acts as a barrier between me and the fabric. I have saved my shirts this way!

  2. I use this same recipe and just add a little essential oil. It works better than any other deodorant I've used.
I did have a reaction to the baking soda though so some people might want to just reduce the amount they use.

  3. I also use this basic recipe and it rocks...I use cornstarch instead of arrowroot, and a little less baking soda because of my sensitive skin. I also add essential oils and it works really well. I'm a hot yoga teacher and practicing daily in 100+ degree heat...and I DO NOT stink! It's awesome!

  4. Is it also an antiperspirant?

    1. The answer is sort of... depending on the baking soda you use. If you are not using aluminium free baking soda than it will prevent perspiration (but you are still going to be getting some of the nasty (you are still smearing metal on your skin... which has been linked to Alzheimer's...)). Unfortunately, the giant bag of baking soda you can get a Sam's Club for under $10 is not aluminium free.

    2. The answer is sort of. It depends on the baking soda you use. As long as your baking soda is not aluminium free it will prevent perspiration. The giant bag of baking soda you can get a Sam's Club for under $10 contains aluminum and will work just fine. The downside, you are still getting a lot of the nasty when you are smearing metal on your skin. The aluminium in deodorant (it's the same thing in store bought) has been linked to a rise in Alzheimer's. If you follow some of the other people's suggestions and include essential oils that are anti-bacterial while using aluminum free baking soda you will still sweat, but you won't smell... and it will be a whole lot better for you.

    3. No. Your body needs to perspire in order to detox.

  5. I'm assuming equal parts by volume. Am I right?

  6. I'm obsessed with this deodorant, I never stink and barely sweat at all. It's so cheap to make. A must try!

  7. Thanks so much for this - I've just made a big batch and it's amazing stuff - I'm never going back to store bought deodorant!

Just to clarify as I suspected that baking soda did not have any aluminum, I did some research and this is what I found

"baking SODA is (by definition) sodium bicarbonate, a chemical that is extracted from the ground. It does not contain aluminum nor is aluminum added to it in processing either by intention or through aluminum equipment.

Baking POWDER is manufactured with baking soda as an ingredient and typically includes a compound containing aluminum. Marketing baking soda as aluminum-free is simply a marketing strategy to play to consumers' confusion while charging more for it. As has been noted, no baking soda has aluminum in it."

    1. Yep! However, there are baking soda brands that are not naturally extracted from the ground, but made in a factory. So if you really want to get organic, you'd need to look online or in your local health food stores for options.

  8. I made the switch and LOVE IT! I used equal parts baking soda, CO and Johnson's Pure cornstarch baby powder and it smells great without adding anything else. Works better than any other deodorant I've used in the past. Thank you for the post.

  9. I've tried "natural" deodorants from different brands and they ultimately disappointed. I know use a sugar scrub with coconut oil for my shower, so there's already coconut oil on my skin, but I don't use it everyday, so I can't contribute the success to that. However, I do take a slice of lime and rub it over the entire "pit area" every morning and right now, it's hella hot here. I was out at a party the other night and felt perspiration building up. I freaked out and ran to the bathroom prepared to try and apply soap or something until I could excuse myself and leave early. I dabbed tissue to absorb the sweat and...no smell! I'm never going back to antiperspirants again.

  10. I just made this, but i like a deodorant bar rather than a paste, so i added half as much coconut oil as the other ingredients. So I used 1/4 c coconut oil, 1/2 c baking soda and 1/2 c cornstarch (instead of arrowroot powder). It came out with a nice consistency, very soft. I packed it down into a deodorant stick that I had used up, you would never know its not the store bought stuff! I even have some left over. I also added a couple tsp of my perfume, since I don't have essential oil, just to give it a nice smell. Thanks for sharing this recipe!
